A strike by cabin attendants grounded nearly half of Alitalia's flights on Thursday, stranding tens of thousands of passengers and creating new headaches for the loss-making Italian carrier.
The contract dispute with flight attendants prompted Alitalia to cancel an estimated 356 flights and is expected to affect roughly 30,000 passengers. Alitalia usually has about 800 flights daily.
Alitalia said the strike havoc would carry over into Friday, more bad news for an airline already losing more than EUR1 million euros (USD$1.36 million) a day.
«Strike? What strike?» asked a shocked Polish traveller at Rome's Fiumicino Airport. «I have to go to Poland.»
The Italian state is looking to sell its controlling stake in the airline. Tackling Alitalia's notoriously tough unions is expected to be among the challenges facing any buyer.
Three consortia of foreign and US bidders have presented non-binding bids.
