The New York market just got a little hotter with WestJet Airlines Ltd. saying it would add new seasonal non-stop service between Calgary and Newark International Airport this June.

The news follows just one week after Air Canada said it would add new daily service between the Western oil hub and Newark, N.J., beginning June 16.

«New York City is a global icon and is an exciting addition to WestJet's growing network,» said Bob Cummings, WestJet vice-president of guest experience and marketing, in a statement. «There is great demand for Western Canadians travelling to New York City this summer and WestJet is pleased to offer guests a high-value, low-fare option.»

Introductory prices for flights from Calgary to Newark are $199 one way.

Toronto Island upstart Porter Airlines has also said it would begin flying from the Toronto Island airport to Newark beginning at the end of March.

WestJet has tried in the past to offer service to the New York through La Guardia airport, but was unable to make a go of it and cancelled the route a few months later in July 2005.

Adding the popular business destination is part of the Calgary carrier's ongoing strategy to add one or two U.S. business destinations a year. This strategy that has become more feasible with its upgraded Open Skies reservation system recently allowing it to sell tickets in the U.S. market through Expedia.com, the world's largest online travel site.
